Meaning of the Structure of “在 + the Object Being Offered Sacrifice” in Oracle Bone Inscriptions

Wang ZiYang;
Based on the present oracle bone inscriptions, the author reviews the structure of "在 + the object being offered sacrifice" after the verbs in oracle bone inscriptions and points out that it is quite different in grammar and semantics from the form of "于 + the object being offered sacrifice". The former is a fixed structure with the meaning of "only for" because of the context while the latter is merely the general usage of the preposition "于" to lead the object. Through the above analysis, the paper tries to restore the original meaning of this structure to provide linguistic evidence for a thorough understanding of the oracle inscriptions. Furthermore, the reason why the structure of "在 + the object being offered sacrifice" has the above additional meanings has been revealed.
