Applied anatomy of cavernous sinus embolism through superior ophthalmic vein

Objective:To provide anatomy data for treatment of carotidcavernous sinus fistulas by means of cavernous sinus embolism through superior ophthalmic vein. Methods:Morphology,length and outer diameters of superior ophthalmic vein and its branches of external orbital were studied and measured on 24 adult head specimens.Results:Superior ophthalmic vein was consisted of supraorbital vein and communicating branch of angula vein.The mean outer diameter of supraorbital vein at supraorbital foramen,the angular vein and its communicating branches were 1.3 mm、1.4 mm and 1.4 mm separately.Superior ophthalmic vein was divided into three parts in orbital cavity,and the mean outer diameter was 2.1～2.5 mm.Conclusions:It is possible to perform cavernous sinus embolism through external orbital branch of superior ophthalmic vein.
