bjective: To observe the differences in capillary density (CD) of rat costal and crural diaphragm (DIcos and DIcru) and compare with two hindlimb muscles. Methods: The muscle fiber types and capillaries were identified by myosin ATPase histochemistry and the CD were measured by using a computerized imageprocessing system. Results:The CD of the DIcos is significantly higher than that of the DIcru and the two hindlimb muscles. The CD of type Ⅰand ⅡA is higher than type B.And a significant difference in CD of the type ⅡB fibers could be observed, which is higher in the DIcos than that of other three muscles. Conclusions:The present study showed that there are differences in CD between the DIcos and DIcru, which may be deter mined by their different functional demands.
