Objective:To provide anatomical basis for designing a periosteal(bone) flap to repair fracture, nonunions and osseous defect of femurMethods:The origin, course, branches, distribution and anastomosis of the periosteal vessels on anterior femur were observed on 40 sides of adult cadaveric lower limbsResults:The periosteal vessels of anterior femur were supplied by muscular branches of musculus vastue lateralis and musculus vastus intermedius, descending genicular vessels, lateral superior genicular vessels, femoral artery and the intermuscular branch of deep femoral arteryThe ascending branch, descending branch and anastomotic branch were sent out and anastomosis to network after the vessels reached to the periostemConclusions:An anterior femoral periosteal flap pedicled with segmental periosteal branch could be designed to repair femoral nonunion and defect
