Analysis of carotid intimae-media thickness and related factors in youth patients with polycystic ovary syndrome

Objective To study sub-clinic atherosclerosis in youth patients with polycystic ovary syndrome(PCOS), to analyze the relative risk factors and to provide the base for exploring the mechanism of PCOS. Methods A total of 36 young PCOS cases and30 healthy controls matched on the basis of age and body mass index(BMI) served as the PCOS group and control group. The carotid intimae-media thickness(CIMT) of two groups was measured and the physical examinations for all subjects were performed,including blood lipid levels, the indexes of glucose metabolism and sex hormone levels. Results WHR, testosterone(T), LH, TG, TC,LDL-C, INS0 min, HOMA-IR, AUCGLU(0-120 min), AUCINS(0-120 min)and CIMT of PCOS group were 0.79±0.10,(1.70±0.40) nmol/L,(10.90 ±5.70) m IU/L,(1.28 ±0.40) mmol/L,(4.53 ±0.90) mmol/L,(3.05 ±0.90) mmol/L,(12.10 ±4.80) m U/ml, 2.68 ±1.90,(843.73±171.60) min·mmol/L,(4 104±928) min·m U/ml and(0.54±0.09) mm, respectively, which were significantly higher than those [0.76 ±0.10,(0.60 ±0.20) nmol/L,(4.60 ±1.60) m IU/L,(0.94 ±0.40) mmol/L,(3.40 ±0.72) mmol/L,(2.66 ±0.57) mmol/L,(6.50±2.00) m U/ml, 1.44±0.81,(730.90±155.50) min·mmol/L,(2 350±552) min·m U/ml and(0.41±0.06) mm, respectively] of control group(P0.05, P0.01). HDL-C [(1.16±0.36) mmol/L] and AUCGLU/AUCINS(0.20±0.31) of PCOS group were significantly lower than those [(1.47±0.33) mmol/L and 0.32±0.20, respectively] of control group(P0.01). Multiple linear regression analysis showed that age, BMI and HOMA-IR were associated with CIMT(P0.01). Conclusion Youth PCOS patients could have the trend of sub-clinical atherosclerosis. Age, body weight and IR may be the risk factors for sub-clinical atherosclerosis in youth PCOS patients.
