Are There Laws of Nature in Biology ? —— Objections to Sober

FANG Wei(School of Philosophy,Fudan University,Shanghai 200433,China)
The problem of " Are there laws in biology ?" is closely related with the status of biological sciences as an autonomous discipline.Elliot Sober is one of those philosophers who insist the existence of laws in biology.Alexander Rosenberg and John Beatty propose " The Supervenience Thesis " and " The Evolutionary Contingency Thesis " respectively to object Sober and then further to maintain the inexistence of laws in biology. In the face of Rosenberg and Beatty ’ s objections,Sober gives his unshaken reply and puts forward " The Priori Law Thesis ".Through reconstructing and strengthening " The Supervenience Thesis " and " The Evolutionary Contingency Thesis ",and objecting Sober ’ s " The Priori Law Thesis ",this essay aims at arguing that there is no such thing as a law in biology.
