LOHAS Tourism:Investigating New Strategies for Tourism Sustainable Development in China

ZHAO Jinling(Shanghai Normal University Tourism Department,Shanghai 200234,China)
In some developed countries,LOHAS is taken as a kind of healthy and sustainable life style and has become a fashion trend. At the critical time when markets are under pressures from the global financial crisis as well as other events that are impacting the flow of global tourism trades,LOHAS tourism would lead regional economy to the blue sea strategy to meet market demands.LOHAS tourism is a kind of high level tourism based on ecotourism, which shapes LOHAS life and can also be the carrier of the development of LOHAS industry.LOHAS tourism by means of creative experience tends to offer the tourist deeply cultural travel experience. In general, the LOHAS life contains six components:clothes, food, communication, construction, education, and entertainment, all of which involve and reflect cultural accumulation, congregation and art fusion based on historical wisdoms. The nature of LOHAS tourism is life-related industries which make people's lives more healthy, green and happy. The means for implementing LOHAS is termed LOHAS tourism. In the present paper, the author briefly discussed the characteristics, nature and differences of the LOHAS tourism and common tourism, the nature of the LOHAS cultural creative tourism, and the potential of the LOHAS industry market. Moreover, the author put forward a kind of conjunct development between the LOHAS tourism and LOHAS life-industries,aiming at offering suggestions about developing LOHAS life industry in China. It was suggested that the development framework is similar to a pyramid consisting of five levels. The first level is the base,on which the regional environment must be an overall design. The second level is about the industry design. The third level includes the elements that can be used by tourism, such as regional features, cultural features, social trends, fashions, and leisure. The fourth level is concerned with agriculture tourism, industrial tourism and cultural tourism. The core of all tourism industries is the highest level-experience,creation and LOHAS cultural knowledge. All tourism development without the highest level would lose their attractions quickly.Furthermore, the author provided three strategies for LOHAS tourism development,i.e.,integrating tourism resources, promoting LOHAS tourism environment education function and creating a healthy picture of tourists' destinations. The environment is being destroyed by irrational utilization and development of tourism resources;accordingly social and cultural resources need be appropriately protected and reserved.LOHAS tourism would lead tourism to a deep LOHAS life-style,greatly helping people shape a new life attitude and a new life style and making the creative life industry shift to a sustainable, healthy, and green LOHAS industry.
