Evaluation and Improvement of the FAO-56 Soil Water Stress Coefficient Approach Using Field Experimental Data

Soil water stress coefficient (Ks) is an integrated index that quantifies soil water limit to crop growth and water consumption processes. The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) approach for calculating Ks is commonly used, which needs to be locally calibrated for proper application. The authors evaluated the FAO approach using field observation data from the Yucheng Comprehensive Experimental Station (YCES, 36°57'N, 116°38′E), located in the southern North China Plain (NCP). Evapotrasnpiration, soil water content profiles, leaf area index data for winter wheat were obtained through the large-scale weighing lysimeter and the winter wheat plot tests and used to evaluate the Ks approaches. Performances of the Ks approaches were evaluated by comparing the soil water contents derived from the water balance equation to the observed ones. Results showed that the soil water contents were underestimated when the FAO approach was adopted to estimate the crop evapotranspiration, especially at the initial growth stage of the winter wheat with the root mean square error (RMSE) and mean bias error (MBE) 0.95 mm and 0.43 mm, respectively. Crop evapotranspiration was introduced into the FAO Ks approach to improve estimation of the parameter p. When the modified Ks approach was adopted, the RMSE and MBE for comparing the calculated and observed soil water contents were 0.72 mm and 0.06 mm, respectively, which might imply a more accurate estimation of the crop evapotranspiration.
