Induction of Somatic Embryos from Chinese Cultivar 'Meizhonghong' of Papaya(Carica papaya L.) with Red Flesh

The effects of different maturities of papaya (Carica papaya) embryos, different concentrations of 2,4-D and culture conditions on embryogenesis of Chinese cultivar 'Meizhonghong' and the progress of so-matic embryogenesis were studied. The results showed that the bigger embryos (90–120 d) with white cotyle-don and episperm cultured on MS induction medium supplemented with 10 mg·L-1 2,4-D were best for induc-tion of calli. The callus induction rate increased with the increase of concentration of 2,4-D from 0–10 mg·L-1. Calli formation occurred first from epidemic cells of radicle and somatic embryo mostly occurred from the calli of plumula.
