Physiological characteristics of super-rice seedling in southern China

The physiological characteristics including dry matter weight,chlorophyll contents of the leaves,root activity and new root development ability of the 7 super-rice varieties such as the two-line hybrid rice Yueza 122,line varieties Guangchao 3 and shengtai 1 were measured at the seedling stage in Guangzhou,both in the early crop and late crop,2001.The difference in the physiological characteristics among the varieties and relationship between dry matter weight and the physiological characteristics were analyzed.The results showed that:(1) Chlorophyll a (Chl a) and Chlorophyll b (Chl b) contents may be used effectively as physiological index to differentiate seedling, quality in the early and late crop,respectively.(2) Path analysis of Chl a and Chl b content,root activity,length of the longest new root,new root number per plant and dry matter weight showed that there existed the largest positive direct effect of Chl a content upon dry matter in the early crop and of Chl b content upon dry matter in the late crop while the largest negative direct effect of Chl b upon dry matter in the early crop and of Chl a upon dry matter in the late crop although dry matter of above-ground part could be used as a measure of seedling quality.The physiological indices at seedling stage of double cropping super-rice in southern China were proposed for ideotype breeding.
