Four CMS lines with different fertile levels were used as materials to investigate three sterility indexes of CMS lines, bagged seed setting rate, dark pollen rate by I2-IK dyed and rate of florets with fertile anthers. The results showed that all three indexes were phenotype of restoring genes with minor effect, while rate of florets with fertile anthers was the most suitable index because it was easy to investigate and its value was bigger and stable. This index (rate of florets with fertile anthers) could be use as an important tool to study genetic rule of restoring genes with minor effect and its further molecular mechanism.
