Optimization of MoSi_2/Stainless Steel Joining with Graded Joint

The feasibility of joining MoSi2 to 316L stainless steel with spark plasma sintering(SPS) techniques was investigated with MoSi2 /316L stainless steel graded material as the transition system.The sintering process and graded joint were analyzed and optimized.The results showed that the optimum process was to sinter the sample at 1000 ℃ and under 50 MPa pressure for a holding time of 10 min.The heating rate was 100 ℃·min-1 and the cooling was finished in two steps,first to 600 ℃ at the rate of 6 ℃·min-1 and under 40 MPa pressure,then furnace cooling down to room temperature under 40 MPa pressure.The optimum graded joint was constructed with 7 layers with same thickness(d=0.8).The MoSi2 volume fraction in each layer was 40%,50%,60%,70%,80%,90% and 95%,respectively.The joint of MoSi2/316L was obtained by SPS sintering using the specific sintering process and graded multilayer structure.The microstructure of each graded layer was dense and uniform,and no visible crack or disfigurement appeared at the faces between graded interlayers.
