Strength and Fracture Toughness of Beta-Titanium Alloys

The strength and fracture toughness of β titanium alloy is controlled by the components,heat treatments and microstructure.β stable elements and neutral elements can improve the strength of β titanium alloy while reduce the fracture toughness.Small β grain can hardly increase the strength of aged β titanium alloy and fracture toughness of β-C and Ti-1023 alloy,however,it may decrease fracture toughness of Ti-15-3 alloy.The strength of aged β titanium alloy depends on the volume and size of second β phase precipitating in aging treatment.Under the same condition of primary β phase,small second β phase can rise strength effectively.The decreasing of plasticity and increasing of fracture toughness are caused by coarse and plate-shape primary β phase.Strength,plasticity and toughness are in good balance as a result of the bi-modal structure of β titanium alloy.
