Refining of Zirconium by Molten Salt Electrolysis

The melting points of NaCl/K2ZrF6 molten salt systems with different ratio were tested,and the lower of them was 721 ℃ for K2ZrF6∶ NaCl of 3∶ 7.The influences of molten salt ratio,electrolysis temperature and cathode current density on current efficiency in NaCl-K2ZrF6 molten system were investigated.The results showed that electrolysis temperature and cathode current density were both in inverse proportion to current efficiency.The product quality was determined by XRD and elementary analysis.The preferred process parameters were as follows: K2ZrF6∶ NaCl of 3∶ 7,refining temperature of 800 ℃,and cathode current density of 1 A·cm-2.With above parameters,the current efficiency was increased to bigger than 84%.Cathode zirconium achieved qualified standard of industrial zirconium.The impurity contents of Fe,Ni,Cr and Mn were reduced from 2700×10-6,540×10-6,350×10-6 and 400×10-6 to less than 30×10-6,10×10-6,18×10-6 and 100×10-6 respectively,and the purity of cathode zirconium was better than 99%.
