Effect of Hypothyroidism on Learning and Memory in Young Rats.

Objective To explore the effect of hypothyroidism on learning and memory in young rats. Methods Reproduced hypothyroidism model of young rats (n=40) from pregnant SD female rats were involved, of which 20 young rats were selected randomly to inject T4 with 2μg/100g body weight into the abdominal cavity everyday throughout the lactational period as T_4 treatment group. The other 20 young rats of hypothyroidism received no special treatment. Meanwhile 20 normal male young rats were selected as the control group. Learning ability of the young rats was measured at 50 th day since they were born by means of a step-through passive avoidance test and radial-arm maze learning test. Test results were compared among the three groups. Results Compared with the control group and T4 treatment group, the passive avoidance learning test in hypothyroidism young rats showed more errors and shorter latency; the radial-arm maze learning test in hypothyroidism group showed more reference memory errors, while working memory error and total time in the radial-arm maze had no statistical difference. Conclusions The ability of learning and memory of young rats were impaired by hypothyroidism.
