Objective:To study the effect of electro-acupuncture with behavior therapy on preschool children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder(ADHD).Methods:180 children were enrolled by the ADHD criteria of DSM-IV and were further classified into 3 subtypes: predominantly inattentive type(PI,60 cases),predominantly hyperactive-impulsive type(HI,60cases) and combined type(CT,60 cases). In each subtype, the patients were divided randomly into experimental group, which received electro-acupuncture and behavior therapy;and control group, which received behavior therapy only. The symptom changes of ADHD were recorded and analyzed based on the criteria of DSM-IV,and the relapse rates of two groups were compared after a half-year follow-up.Results:(1)According to the criteria of the national traditional Chinese medicine committee,in PI subtype,11 cases showed effectiveness with treatment and 12 cases showed improvement with treatment among experimental group, while 5 cases showed effectiveness with treatment and 12 cases showed improvement with treatment among control group;in HI subtype,10 cases showed effectiveness and 17 cases showed improvement among experimental group, while 4 cases showed effectiveness and 14 cases showed improvement among control group;in CI subtype,12 cases showed effectiveness and 12 cases showed improvement among experimental group, while 5 cases showed effectiveness and 12 cases showed improvement among control group; The overall comparison manifested that the efficacy of experimental group was better than that of control group(P0.05).(2) Half-year follow-up showed the relapse rate of experimental group was significantly lower than that of control group(P0.05).Conclusion:The electro-acupuncture combining with behavior therapy has efficacy to the preschool children with ADHD for improving primary symptoms and reducing the relapse rate.It is recommendable for this combined therapy.
