Study of Jue: The Calculation Unit of Jade in Shang and Zhou Dynasty

Sun Qingwei
Among those pre-Qin historical recordings the character for was often employed to count jade wares, however, it is still uncertain how many jades one jue meant. Comparing the recordings mentioned in oracle and bone inscriptions and bronze inscriptions with those archaeologically unearthed jade things, the author asserts that the character jue was used as a specific term for numbing jades and that exactly referred to two jades in the Shang and Zhou periods. The author also demonstrates that the character jue particularly meant such two similar jades, which were cut from a same raw material or froms a thicker and prepared jade.
