The effect of four parameters (strength, frequency, lasting and starting time) of interrupted longitudinal compression on fracture healing was studied using an experimental method of uniform design and rabbit radius as the study subject. Transverse experimental fracture was made in rabbit radius and different parameters of interrupted longitudinal compression were exerted. Four weeks later, the callus formation was evaluated radiologically and histopathologically and the data were treated statistically. The results showed a secondary fracture healing and the optimum fracture healing obtained under the following conditions: strength of 25.58 N, frequency of 2.0 Hz, and lasting time of 5 minute per day. The effect of starting time (from the operation day to the 20th day postoperatively) was little, but there was a tendency that the sooner the compression is exerted, the better fracture healing is achieved. The significant stimulative effect of interrupted longitudinal compression on fracture healing may be attributed to the microkinetics and growth factor in the fractured fragments.
