Improving the Stiffness of Paperboard by a New Technology of Applying a UF Gel Internally in Pulp

In this paper,an alcohol-soluble UF resin was added into high consistency pulp.After heating(about 75 ~80 ℃) the pulp for a few minutes,the UF resin preliminarily gelled and wrapped the fiber surfaces.After the dryer section,the gelling and curing of the UF resin was completed.Consequently,the stiffness of the board was improved significantly.Results showed that the alcohol-soluble UF retention ratio was high and the ring crush strength of the board was improved more than 50% when the treatment was at pH for 4~5 and heating time was 6 min.In addition,starch was found to have synergistic effect with the UF resin on retention and strengthening,for it could not only increase the retention ratio to the level as high as 92%,but also it increased the ring-crush strength by 68%.Based on the facts that the raw materials for synthesis is very abundant and the cost for the synthesis is low,we can conclude that it is of great practical significance to employ the UF resin as a reinforcing agent for paper stiffness.
