The Funerary Phenomenon of Swine Bones in the Middle and Lower Reaches of the Han River in New Stone Age——the Relationship with Similar Burial Custom along the Yellow River

It is a popular burial custom along the Yellow River to bury swine bones with the dead. Archaeological discoveries indicate that it is popular in the middle or lower reaches of the Han river as well. By analyzing the material of the funerary swine bones,and the popular region, evolution ,place of funerary swine bones, the meaning, and the relationship with similar burial custom along the Yellow River, this article considers that the swine bone burial custom reached its culmination in the period of 5300-4600BP in the northwest region of Hubei along middle reaches of Han River. During this period, it was popular to bury with swine mandible bones and some times with head and the hole body in order to provide "meet" to the dead. The swine bones burial custom maybe influenced by the Peiligang Culture, and come along with Yangshao Culture to the northwest of Hubei and lower reaches of Han River.
