CHARACTERISTICS AND EXPLOITATION OF THE BAITUPO BENTONITE DEPOSIT IN LINGLI COUNTY, HUNAN

The Baitupo bentonite deposit is hosted in Lower Pleistocene. It is easy to be mined because of the stable extension of orebodies, great thickness and low stripping volume. The mineralogy is characterized by montmorillonite (37.5%～46.8%) and minor quartz, kaolinite, chlorite etc. The ores feature Fe 2O 3 5.72%～6.51% and whiteness of 26.5%～34%. The technical index of primary ores meets the needs of industrial casting bentonite. The montmorillonite contents of purified bentonite range from 55.2% to 69.3%. The wet compressive strength of artificial soda-bentonite is 0.18kgf/cm 2～0.27kgf/cm 2. The hot-wet stretch strength is 17.8gf/cm 2～22.4gf/cm 2. The decolorizing index of active bentonite is 110～113. The activity is 188 mmol～191mmol H+/kg. The free acid content is 0.19%. Consequently, the bentonite from this deposit can be used as coherent agent of casting sand, mud material for drilling, printing and dyeing material for textile process, mineral additive of forage, coating material for building, coherent agent of smelting pellet.
