Synthesis of Benzoic Esters Using Sodium Bisulfate as a Catalyst

Benzoic esters were synthesized using sodium bisulfate monohydrate as a catalyst from benzoic acid and various alcohols. The reaction conditions were as follows: benzoic acid 50mmol, n(benzoic acid) ∶n(alcohol) ∶n(sodium bisulfate)=1 ∶3(or 4) ∶0.2, reaction time 2h. The benzoic esters was characterized by elementary analysis, IR and 1H NMR.
