Experimental Research on the Mechanisms of the Effect of Compound Rhubarb Antiaging Preparation for Enhancing Memory

Objective To investigate the mechanisms of the effect of Compound Rhubarb Antiaging Preparation (CRAP) for enhancing memory. Method The changes in the levels of Ach and AchE and in the activities of various kinds of peroxydase were detected in the brain in 12-month-old mice and the mice with cerebral malfunction induced by D-galactose. Results CRAP could markedly increase, when given at a large dose to both 12-month-old mice and the mice with cerebral malfunction induced by D-galactose, the activities of cortical CAT and GSH-px, decrease the activity of AchE, and increase the level of Ach (P0.05 or P0.01); and also could markedly increase the activities of cerebellar SOD, CuSOD and Mn-SOD, and decrease the level of LPO (P0.05 or P0.01). When given at a small dose to both 12-month-old mice and the mice with cerebral malfunction induced by D-galactose, CRAP could remarkably increase the activity of cortical CAT (P0.05 or P0.01), and decrease the level of cerebellar LPO (P0.05 or P0.01). Conclusion The effect of enhancing memory of CRAP is close related with its actions of increasing the activities of CAT, GSH-px and SOD, inhibiting the activity of AchE, and increasing the level of Ach.
