Hypoglycemic Activity of Polysaccharide from Gynostemma pentaphyllum on Type 2 Diabetic Rats and its Mechanism

To investigate the hypoglycemic and hypolipidemic effects of polysaccharide from Gynostemma pentaphyllum on type 2 diabetic rats and discuss the mechanisms,Type 2 diabetes rat model was induced by injection of streptozotocin after feeding high-fat and high-sugar forage.The rats were divided into six groups.After the rats were treated with Gynostemma pentaphyllum polysaccharide or positive control agent for 2 months,the changes of blood glucose,insulin,total cholesterol,triglycerides,high density lipoprotein,low density lipoprotein and other biological indexes were assessed.Administration of the polysaccharide from Gynostemma pentaphyllum reduced blood glucose in a dose-dependent manner and decreased glucose tolerance curve.Compared with model group,Gynostemma pentaphyllum polysaccharide groups significantly decreased blood total cholesterol,triglycerides,low density lipoprotein and malonaldehyde,and increased blood insulin,superoxide dismutase and high density lipoprotein.It is conclused that these data indicate that Gynostemma pentaphyllum polysaccharide has hypoglycemic and hypolipidemic effects in rats with STZ-induced type 2 diabetes.The mechanism may be related with the increasing of serum insulin and antioxidant activity.
