Comments and Advice on the Rhythm-Sound System of Gong Diao

DU Yaxiong;Musicology Department,China Conservatory of Music;
Gong diao is one of the core problems in traditional Chinese musicology, the rhythm-sound system being its key. Ancient discourses about them are brief, rich, and ambiguous, therefore need improvement in order to construct the theoretical discourse system of Chinese music. This article proposes using "sound names" to replace the traditional "scale names" and using monosyllabic sound names to help people remember and remember them as Chinese terminologies. It also differentiates the implied meanings of gong, points out the existence of diao modes in traditional Chinese music, and proposes using three concepts from Chinese musicology, xuangong, fandiao, and diaozhuanhuan, to replace the concept "modulation" from Western musicology.
