The Mechanism of Action of Astragalus Injection to Treat Chronicity Primary Insomnia

Objective To observe the clinical efficacy of Astragalus injection to treat the patients who had insomnia,and also to prob its mechanism of action.Methods A total of 164 elderly patients with chronicity primary insomnia were randomly divided into astragalus injection group (84 cases),dengzanxixin injection group (80 cases)for 2 weeks as a course.The hours of sleep at night,5-hydroxyindole,5-hydroxyindole aceticacid and tumor necrosis factor-α level were observed.Results The excellent response rate of astragalus injection group and dengzanxixin injection group were 88.1% and 68.8% respectively(P0.05).The blood plasm level of 5- hydroxyindole and 5- hydroxyindole aceticacid,and blood serum level of TNF-α did not differ between two groups pretherapy,but post-treatment each of them had significant difference(P0.05).Conclusion The study suggests that astragalus injection is an effective drug for the treatment of elderly patients with chronic primary insomnia and has less side effects.This chief mechanism of action of the drug may be increase the function and metabolism of 5- hydroxyindole intra-brain by raised the tumor necrosis factor-αlevel to promote slow wave sleep and decrease awake times.
