Comparison of Displacement Calculation in Material Mechanics, Structural Mechanics and Elastic Mechanics

Displacement calculation is an important research content in deformable body mechanics. Material mechanics, structural mechanics and elastic mechanics all involve the displacement calculation of structures or components. Different courses often lead to different displacement calculation of the same structure or component due to the different calculation assumptions and the complexity of the research object. In this paper, simply supported rectangular beam under uniform load is taken as the research object, and displacement solutions obtained from the three mechanics courses are compared and analyzed, and the reasons for the approximate solutions obtained from material mechanics and structural mechanics are pointed out. In addition, unit load method is used in structural mechanics to deduce the displacement solution at any position of simply supported beam, which eliminates the stereotype that the general structural mechanics textbooks seem to only be able to find the vertical and rotational displacements of a certain position of the structure or component. If the difference between the three courses in calculating displacement can be clarified and integrated in the classroom, it will not only improve the students' interest in learning, but also deepen the students′ understanding of the three mechanics.
