The Orphan and the Hero: Hero of China during the Spread of Chinese Culture to the West
Wei Mei;
In 1752, the famous poet and opera writer Pietro Metastasio dedicated to Queen Queen Maria Theresia Hero of China, which is not only a response of Vienna Court drama to the “Chinoiserie”, but also a proof of Mei's learning of Chinese culture and thought. Influenced by Chen Shouyi's article “The Orphan of Zhao in Eighteenth-Century European Literature”(1929)published in Lingnan Journal, Hero of China has long been regarded as an adaptation of The Orphan of Zhao. However, after the writer's analyzing the script of Hero of China published in Hamburg, Germany in 1754 and other relevant documents, this argument is found invalid.
