Calcareous sand is a granular material which contains over 50 % of CaCO3. Due to its special components and structure, calcareous sand displays unique mechanical and engineering characteristics. The paper summarizes and describes the behaviors of sand during compressing and shearing and the related mechanism. It is pointed out that in the research on mechanical and engineering properties of calcareous sand it isnecessary to syntheticaly consider particle break, dilatance and rearrangement.
