When ultrasonic waves are applied to detect the settling particles, the phase differences of ultrasonic echoes will appear owing to particle movement. In this paper, by analyzing the phase and recombining the signal of the ultrasonic echoes at a determined depth in the measuring cup, it is found that the frequency of the recombined signal can calculate the particle size. In addition, the experiments of sampling and recombining ultrasonic signals were conducted for two suspensions of polymethyl methacrylate(PMMA) with different particle size distributions. The experimental results were analyzed by wavelet time-frequency method, and it was confirmed that there was indeed a high correlation between the particle size distribution and the frequency distribution of the combined signal.
