OBJECTIVE To investigate the therapeutic effect of Xiaomin Formula atomization combined with oral medication on allergic conjunctivitis with pattern of dampnessheat complicated by wind.METHODS A total of seventy-two allergic conjunctivitis patients with pattern of dampness-heat complicated by wind who were admitted to the Ophthalmology Department of Suzhou Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine, from July 2018 to January 2021 were randomly divided into three groups, Chinese medicine group(CMG), integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine group(ITWG) and control group(CG). The patients of CMG were treated with Xiaomin Formula atomization combined with oral medication, the patients of CG with azelastine hydrochloride eye drops, and the patients of ITWG with the above two methods at the same time. After two weeks of the treatment, the clinical symptom scores and physical signs scores were observed, while the symtoms scores, physical signs scores, and recurrence rate were evaluated after three months.RESULTS (1) Symptom scores: There was no statistically significant difference in symptom scores among the three groups before treatment(P0.05). Two weeks after treatment, symptom scores in the three groups were lower than those before treatment, with statistically significant differences(t_(ITWG)=9.315, t_(CMG)=11.382, t_(CG)=8.737, all P=0.000). However, there was no significant difference between the groups(P0.05). After three months of treatment, the symptom scores of the three groups were lower than those before treatment, and the differences were statistically significant(t_(ITWG)=11.143,t_(CMG)=11.845, t_(CG)=9.013, all P=0.000). Meanwhile, compared among the three groups, the difference was statistically significant(F=5.495, P=0.006). Then pairwise comparison between the CMG, the ITWG and the CG showed the differences were statistically significant(t_(ITWG)=-2.724, P=0.008, t_(CMG)=-2.946, P=0.004). However, there was no significant difference between the CMG and ITWG(P0.05).(2) Physical signs scores: There was no statiscally significant difference in the physical signs scores among the three groups before treatment(P0.05). Two weeks after treatment, the physical signs scores in the three groups were lower than those before treatment, and the differences were statistically significant(t_(ITWG)=10.196, t CMG=10.969, t CG=10.798, all P=0.000). Meanwhile, compared among the three groups, the difference was statistically significant(F=6.266, P=0.003). Then pairwise comparison between the CMG, the ITWG and the CG showed the differences were statistically significant(t_(ITWG)=-3.073, P=0.003, t CMG=-2.994, P=0.004). However, there was no significant difference between the CMG and ITWG(P0.05). After three months of treatment, the physical signs scores in the three groups were significantly lower than those before treatment(t_(ITWG)=10.857, t_(CMG)=10.648, t CG=9.962, all P=0.000). Meanwhile, when compared among the three groups, the difference was statistically significant(F=7.688, P=0.001). Then the LSD method was used to compare the CMG and the ITWG with the CG respectively, and the differences were statistically significant(t_(ITWG)=-3.422, P=0.001, t CMG=-3.296, P=0.002). However, there was no significant difference between the CMG and the ITWG(P0.05).(3) Recurrence rate: Within three months after the treatment, the recurrence rate of the ITWG(18.2%) and the CMG(12.5%) were lower than that of the CG(61.5%), and the difference among the three groups was statistically significant(χ~2=16.565, P=0.000).CONCLUSIONS The treatment of Xiaomin Formula atomization combined with oral medication, or combined with azelastine hydrochloride eye drops, has a good therapeutic effect on allergic conjunctivitis, and can effectively reduce the recurrence rate.
