The relationship between anxiety,depression and personality and social support in Railroad workers

Objective:To investigate the relationship between anxiety,depression and personality and social support among railroad workers.Methods:A cross-sectional epidemiological study was conducted among a representative sample of railroad workers who worked within the precinct of Jinan Railroad Branch Bureau.Zung's Self-Rating Anxiety Scale(SAS),Zung's Self-Rating Depression Scale(SDS),Eysenck Personality Question Naire(EPQ) and Social Support Rating Scale(SSRS) were employed in the study.Results: The prevalence of anxiety and depression was 18.5% and 35.1%,respectively;the prevalence of anxiety was 21.6% in the male and 2.1% in the female,there was significant difference between genders(P0.05).More social support was reported in the female(P0.01).The mood of the railroad workers tended to be unstable.The total scores of the SAS,SDS were significantly positively correlated with the scores of EPQ-N and EPQ-P,and significantly negatively correlated with total SSRS score(all p's0.01).Conclusions: Railroad workers reported more anxiety and depression symptoms,and social support showed important impact on the anxiety and depression.Adequate interventions should be taken to improve their ability to adjust their emotions,to utilize the social support,and then to improve their quality of life.
