The hydroxyl free radical(·OH) scavenging activity, superoxide anion radical(O-2·) scavenging activity, total antioxidant activity(T-AOC) and antibacterial activity of the methanol extract,70% ethanol extract and aqueous extract from Acalypha australis L.were investigated. The results showed:70% ethanol extract exhibited the best antioxidant activity, the ·OH scavenging activity,O-2· scavenging activity and T-AOC of 70% ethanol extract were higher than that of methanol extract and aqueous extract. All the three extracts showed certain antibacterial activity against the Escherichia coli,Staphylococcus aureus,Staphylococcus epidermidis,Bacillus subtilis and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, whose diameters of antibacterial zone were greater than control significantly, and their inhibitory activities against Staphylococcus epidermidis were weakest. The aqueous extract exhibited a lower inhibition activity against Bacillus subtilis than that of the methanol extract and 70% ethanol extract. The methanol extract was found to be more effective against Escherichia coli than that of the 70% ethanol extract and aqueous extract. The three extracts showed the same effect against Staphyloccocus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
