Influence of healthcare qigong-6-character formulas(Liuzijue) on heart function in patients with chronic heart failure

Objective To review the influence of healthcare qigong-6-character formulas(Liuzijue) on heart function in patients with chronic heart failure(CHF). Methods CHF patients with grade II NYHA or grade III NYHA(n=28) were chosen from the Department of Cardiovascular Diseases in Dongzhimen Hospital of Beijing University of Chinese Medicine from Oct. 2014 to Oct. 2015, and then divided randomly into Liuzijue group(n=9), walking group(n=8) and control group(n=7). All groups were received basic therapy for CHF, and Liuzijue group exercised for 30 min to 40 min each day and walking group walked for 30 min to 40 min each day and target heart rate(THR) was required to reach over 10 min in these 2 groups. The control group kept basic activity. The levels of 6-minute walk test(6MWT), left ventricular ejection fraction(LVEF) and N-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide(NT-pro BNP), and changes of scores of Minnesota Living with Heart Failure Questionnaire(MLHFQ) were observed in 3 groups after 3 months. Results The difference in general baseline data, including age, sex, NYHA, basic diseases and basic activity, had no statistical significance among 3 groups before treatment(all P0.05). The difference in levels of NT-pro BNP, LVEF and 6MWT and MLHFQ scores had no statistical significance among 3 groups before treatment(all P0.05). After treatment, the levels of NT-pro BNP, LVEF and 6MWT and MLHFQ scores were all significantly improved in 3 groups(all P0.05). The levels of LVEF and NT-pro BNP had no statistical difference among 3 groups after treatment(P0.05). The level of 6MWT and MLHFQ scores had significant superiority in Liuzijue group compared with walking group and control group(all P0.05). ConclusionThe healthcare qigong-6-character formulas(Liuzijue) can significantly improve heart endurance and quality of life but has no obvious influence on LVEF and NT-pro BNP.
