Measured Sports:The plateau Phenomenon of the Performances of Elite Athletes

Wu Xiangming, et al.
The plateau phenomenon in this paper refers to the stagnation or even retrogression of an athlete's performance withina certain period of time after the rapid progress in years of training. During this period the athlete's potentialities are notor nearly not fully brought out, but when this period goes by, the performance will be improved again. After a survey ofthe performance curves of 456 Chinese and German elite athletes, the probabilities of the plateau phenomenon and its char-acteristics in view of athletic training were revealed. and the internal and external causes leading to the phenomenon wereanalyzed. Finally, corresponding countermeasures were proposed to reduce and avoid such a phenomenon.
