Based on the development of natural biopharmaceuticals and nutriceuticals, the advances in research and development of the resource plant Phyllanthus emblica L., widely distributed in many provinces of South China, are summarized, including its biological, phytogeographical, traditional herbal medicinal, pharmacological and phytochemical studies. Among these studies, some of experimental research work on the studies of microbial enzymatic methods for clarif ication of fruit juice and deprecipitation of fruit wine, made from frish fruits of P. emblica were described in the author’s laboratory, and for the development of a new cosmetic product, the investigation of extraction of bioactive phenolic constituents from the fruit of P. emblica and the use of the extract as skin lightening agents was also discussed, as well as the cultivation possibility of P. emblica in the dry and hot valleies of the Jinsha River brifly introduced. Finally, the current and potential research and development of this resource plant used as drug and foods were evaluated. This work should be valuable to systematic exploitation of P. emblica.
