L CARNITINES EFFECT ON COMPREHENSIVE WEIGHT LOSS PROGRAM IN OBESE ADOLESCENTS

Eighteen obese adolescent students(relative weight120%)aged 13-17 were divided randomly into two groups for a comprehensive weight loss program which included 4 elements i.e nutritional education,physical training,dietary control which limited to 90%-100% of the Chinese RDA,in addition,the experimental group consumed 2g L carnitine/day as food supplement and control group took placebo.The observation remained 3 months and seemed acceptable to all the subjects.Height,weight,skinfold thickness of triceps,subscapular and iliac crista for all subjects were measured once a month during the study.Decreases of baseline weight,relative weight,TSF,SBS,and IC were observed in both groups,but all of the reduction were more significant in experimental group as compared with control group.The average weight loss of the experimental group was 5.11±2.06kg but the control group was 0.52±0.79kg (P0.001),the relative weight,BMI,TSF,SBS,IC of the experiment group decreased by 13.40%,2.60,6.80mm,5.70mm,and 10.90mm respectively,and the same parameters of the control group decreased by 6.50 %,0.88,1.75mm,0.12mm,and 6.63 mm respectively(P0.05).
