QIAO Jian,DONG Shi shan,ZHAO Li hong,SUN Hui ling,LI Kai,ZOU Shu mei (College of Veterinary Medicine,China Agricultural University,Beijing 100094, China)
A new and highly lethal disease of broiler chickens occurred in North China. This disease occurs in 8 to 18 day old broiler chickens. The daily mortality is greater than 4% for 3 days. The peak of death appears in 11 to 16 days of age.The clinical signs are depression, head tremors and seizures, down in sternal or lateral recumbency, coma and death, severe hypoglycemia. The plasma glucose level of affected chickens is as low as 89.8±7.9 mg/dl(The normal level is 220.3±18.7 mg/dl).The gross lesions are multifocal hepatic necrosis, pancreatic, bursal and thymic atrophy, duodenum hemorrhage and enteritis.Histological characters are the multifocal necrosis of hepatocytes, the severe lymphocyte necrosis in the bursal medulla, thymus cortex and gut associated lymphoid tissues.According to the diagnosis standard of the HSMS,this disease is typical HSMS.Controlling the lighting and adding glucose in drinking water can ameliorate the hypoglycemia, mortality and the susceptibility to other disease.
