Improvement of mice immune function with compounds of powdered Maca(Lepidium meyenii) and ginsenosides

Objective:To evaluate the effects of the compound of powdered Maca(Lepidium meyenii)and total ginsenosides from Panax ginseng on enhancement of immune function of mice.Methods: 90 mice were used to conduct Con A-induced lymphocyte transformation test and NK cell activity assay,additional 90 mice were for total hemolytic complement assay(HC50assay)and peritoneal macrophage function mensuration.The 90 mice were randomly to receive one of the six supplementary groups(n=15):a mixture of Maca powder plus total ginsenosides(0.02,0.2 or 1 g·kg-1·d-1,93∶7 per weight of Maca to ginsenoside),Maca powder alone(0.93 g·kg-1·d-1),total ginsenosides alone(0.07 g·kg-1·d-1)and blank control(steam water alone).Each group was orally administered once daily,20 mL·kg-1 each time,for 30 days.Results: In comparison with the blank control group,the compound-fed mice were found to have increases of Con A-induced lymphocyte proliferation and HC50 value,as well as phagocytosing function of peritoneal macrophage and NK cell activity.Conclusion: The compound of Maca powder and total ginesenosides showed the potential in enhances of mice immunity.
